Combination and oily skin

Individuals with a combination skin have their median part of the face (forehead, nose and chin), also called « T zone » rather oily, while temples, cheekbones and jawbones are dry.

This type of skin is often observed between the ages of 20 and 40, and is not necessarily related to the appearance of small spots.

Oily skin physiologically secretes a lot of sebum. It often has an irregular aspect with a thick texture and open pores. Sometimes, the excess of sebum results in the appearance of dermatological disorders such as acne or blackheads.

Causes

The secretion of sebum is related to hormones. At certain moments in life, hormonal secretions are modified and these changes will have an impact on the sebum production. Teenage-hood is particularly concerned, as well as pregnancy and in some cases pre-menopause. These are phases in life during which sebum secretions naturally increase.

With age, sebum production tends to normalise itself and combination to oily skins become drier.

How to take care of it?

It is important to understand that skin secretes sebum to protect itself against external aggressions and to prevent dehydration. Sebum often has a negative connotation because of its association to acne, shiny skin, and to irregular skin texture, but it doesn’t only have defaults!

If the skin creates sebum, it is because it needs it, and if you eliminate it too violently, and too frequently, it will start secreting even more. The use of aggressive products, that are non-adapted and used in the wrong conditions, rubs down the skin, leading to its dehydration, and enhancing the risks of dermatological problems such as acne, red marks, and dehydrated zones.

Cosmetics adapted to these types of skin will slow the production of sebum down, gently eliminating the excess of sebum secretion, and limiting shine. Moreover, the tightening of the pores thanks to the use of astringent actives, will normalise the sebum production. Finally, antiseptic products aiming to re-balance the skin flora can be advised by a dermatologist to improve the general aspect of the skin.

Health tips :

In case of complications related to an important sebum secretion, it is recommended to see a dermatologist in order to establish an adapted skin care routine, that will be non aggressive for the skin.

Beauty tips :

Use gentle cleansing products that do not rub down the skin and do not damage the skin’s natural barrier. If you are not following a medical treatment that counter indicates it, you can do a gentle exfoliation once a week to help your skin get rid of dead cells, and give it more radiance. If you have a tendency to dehydration, avoid the use of foaming products that will need to get rinsed with tap water, often too hard. A skin cleansing in the evening is essential (even if you don’t wear make-up) to eliminate dead cells from the skin, and particles massed during the day.
