Dry skin

In the majority of cases, dry skin looks colourless, rough and feels unsmooth. It feels uncomfortable, as it peals off and causes twinges. However visually, it is often relatively good-looking as its texture is tight.

In its constitution, dry skin presents a very thin cornea layer (= the superficial waterproof layer of the skin), and has difficulty holding in the water contained in the deeper layers of the skin. Therefore, it will have the tendency to naturally dehydrate. Also, being non-lipidic, it produces little amounts of sebum, and has an inefficient hydro-lipidic layer.

Causes

Certain moments of life favour the appearance of dry skin conditions : childhood, menopause and ageing.

The outside environment will also have an impact on skin dryness and certain factors will favour this state : wind and cold, sun exposure, contact with cleaning products, use of non-adapted cares and hygiene products as well as taking certain types of medicine.

In some cases, dry skin can be genetic, for example in the case of atopic skins.

How to take care of it?

The drier the skin is, the more dehydrated it gets and the more prematurely it ages, therefore it is essential to nourish it with fatty substances. Most effective products are the ones that nourish, and contain a high quantity of oils, butters and waxes. These products repair the upper layers of the epidermis, help maintain water in the skin cells, and allow the skin to fully play its barrier role.

Health tips :

A healthy and varied diet is usually enough to lead to sufficient levels of lipids. But sometimes, these levels are not enough :

  • During cold periods in winter, the skin is attacked and gets dry.
  • During periods of “diet”, when one is careful with fatty substances consumption.

Fatty substances should not all be banned and it is important to consume the equivalent of two tablespoons at every meal, favouring omega-3 and essential fatty acids that allow the skin to stay healthy.

Beauty tips :

Apply your nourishing care on a perfectly clean and dry skin, without forgetting the neck, by soft circular massages during one minute, downwards moving upwards, and from the centre towards the sides. Avoid the zone close to the eyes, as fatty substances can make them puffy. Wait a little before using any make-up. And once or twice a week, use a nourishing and/or moisturizing mask.
